Baloian Farms Expands Chili Pepper Varieties For Summer Season

Baloian Farms, a fourth-generation family farm known for its premium sweet and hot peppers, is expanding its chili pepper varieties this summer to meet the growing consumer demand for spicy produce.

From July to September, the West Coast grower will offer an increased selection of chili peppers, including Anaheim, jalapeño, serrano, and tomatillo, coinciding with their Bell Pepper harvest season.

Richard Cowden, overseeing sales and business development, emphasizes the farm's dedication to delivering fresh and flavorful chili peppers while maintaining their high standards of quality and service.

This strategic expansion is a direct response to rising buyer requests for diverse chili options, aiming to cater to various culinary preferences.

By aligning the chili pepper harvest with their Bell Pepper season, Baloian Farms aims to streamline operations and maximize the availability of fresh produce during the peak summer months, ensuring consumers can enjoy a wider range of hot and flavorful peppers.

SAFETY

EFI Prioritizes Farmworker Safety During Extreme Heat Awareness Month with New Toolkit

To mark Extreme Heat Awareness Month, the Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) is focusing on heat safety and preventing sun and heat-related illnesses for agricultural workers.

With record-high temperatures and peak harvest activities, protecting farmworkers' health is a top priority.

EFI has developed a comprehensive toolkit, available at equitablefood.org/heat, which includes a Spanish-language video on heat exhaustion, a bilingual tip sheet, and other resources.

These materials aim to educate workers and employers on combating heat-related health risks.

The U.S. has inconsistent heat protection regulations, with some states having rigorous standards and others lacking measures, leaving many farmworkers at risk. "Education and voluntary compliance are vital for heat safety," says Alexandra Martinez, EFI's marketing associate.

Farmworkers are 35 times more likely to die from heat-related causes compared to other workers.

Heat exposure causes about 2,000 worker fatalities and up to 170,000 heat stress-related injuries annually in the U.S.

EFI's resources also emphasize training workers to recognize and respond to heat-related illnesses.

USDA

USDA Expands Crop Insurance Options for Specialty and Organic Farmers in 2025

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will expand crop insurance options for specialty and organic farmers starting in the 2025 crop year, enhancing risk management opportunities through the USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA).

This initiative includes the introduction of enterprise units for organic farming and expanded enterprise unit eligibility for crops like almonds, apples, and avocados.

The 2025 enhancements also encompass new coverage for sunburned walnuts, insurance for younger almond trees, and extended insurance periods for processing beans.

The revisions, detailed in the Expanding Options for Specialty and Organic Growers Final Rule, aim to streamline processes, reduce administrative burdens, and provide more flexible indemnity payment options.

Future enhancements will further support specialty crop producers with programs like the Shellfish Program expansion, a pilot Fire Insurance Protection – Smoke Index (FIP-SI) for California grape growers, and new Organic Practice Guidelines.
